  • The General English courses help students improve all their skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening). They help students learn the grammar, vocabulary and cultural knowledge necessary for living in the UK and using English in an international context. There is an emphasis on practical, effective and natural communication.

  • Each course has a 10-week syllabus (you can choose to take all 10 weeks, or a smaller number for example 5 weeks). Our syllabus is very flexible and helps us teach you according to your needs. In each 10-week course, we cover a range of important areas. Here is a list of the areas and some examples of the things we often do in each area:

    Language area Examples

    topics: life in the UK, technology, health, going out, music, personality

    grammar: tenses and verb structures, the grammar of phrases, modal verbs, determiners, conditionals

    vocabulary: collocations (words which naturally go together), phrases, idioms, phrasal verbs, affixes

    pronunciation: word stress, difficult sounds, natural pronunciation and phonology for listening

    the four skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening, to improve your communication skills outside the classroom

    effective communication: formal/informal language and politeness, linking sentences together to form texts

    functional language: agreeing/disagreeing, giving advice, giving opinions, suggesting

  • There are two classes of 1.5 hours in your General English course every week (3 hours total each week). Each class has a maximum of 16 students and you will normally have a main teacher through the course; this may change on occasion. The classes have a different focus:

    Evening Class 118.00 – 19.30We use General English materials from a variety of sources (course books, online websites, vocabulary / grammar books, teacher-created worksheets). This helps ensure there is a balance of skills, vocabulary and grammar. Every lesson we also teach our Phrase of the Day to help you sound more natural in your language use. Teachers include additional English focuses which are useful for the students in the class.
    Evening Class 218.00 – 19.30
  • We’ll also give you:

    • online placement test (1 hour) prior to course start to assess your level
    • materials for all your classes;
    • help with pronunciation;
    • at least ten pieces of new language per 90-minute class to help you improve your English;
    • weekly homework;
    • suggestions about how to learn more effectively;
    • when appropriate, practice with authentic materials (texts created for native speakers), so that you are learning real English;
    • an International House Bristol end of course certificate on your final day

    We also run a weekly Conversation Club on Fridays for our international students from 14.00 to 15.30, where you can practise your English with other students and teachers. All students are welcome to join this also for free!
